Deep Is the Hunger by Howard Thurman5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() “The attempt is not to set forth a connected series of observations or reflections, but rather to throw a shaft of light on aspects of thought, of life, of religious experience, as they are encountered in the daily round.”-Howard Thurman, Preface The book is divided into four parts: (1) A sense of history (2) A sense of self (3) A sense of presence and (4) For the quiet time. N.P. by Banana Yoshimoto5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Praise for N.P.: "Fantastical, almost timeless quality. is essential reading, a stunningly simple tale of youthful desires and obsessions. Haunted by Shoji's death, Kazami discovers the truth behind the ninety-eighth story-and comes to believe that "everything that had happened was shockingly beautiful, enough to make you crazy." Banana Yoshimoto's language sweeps the reader immediately into the streets of Tokyo, with her uncanny ability to merge the echoes of Japanese traditional literature with a contemporary plot. But the book may never be published in his native Japan: each translator who takes up the ninety-eighth story chooses death too-including Kazami's boyfriend, Shoji. ![]() ![]() In N.P., a celebrated Japanese writer has committed suicide, leaving behind a collection of stories written in English, entitled N.P. Book Synopsis "Yoshimoto hits some of the same notes that a previous generation's literary masters (say, Kawabata or Tanizaki) might sound, and yet the effect seems artless, spontaneous and wonderfully fresh." - Los Angeles Times Book Review Banana Yoshimoto's warm, witty, and heartfelt depictions of the lives of young Japanese have earned her international acclaim and best-seller status, as well as a place among the best of contemporary Japanese literature. ![]()

Over sea under stone book5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The children begin working to decipher the clues on the manuscript and follow the trail they put down in order to find the Grail meanwhile, they have to work hard to dodge the antagonists who dog their every step. The children find an ancient manuscript and decide it has to be a treasure map, a deduction later confirmed by their ephemeral Great-Uncle Merry, who keeps disappearing at the most inopportune times. From the beginning, the story has a fantastic, Narnia-like quality to it: an old house not their own, with a hidden world (in this case, a room) behind a forgotten wardrobe. It’s evident in the way her characters speak and the way she describes their environment. They run up against a contained cast of characters all bent on acquiring the Grail for unspecified, but no doubt nefarious reasons-and they don’t think twice about stooping to the level of threatening children.Ĭooper obviously understands the ingredients needed to capture a child’s imagination. ![]() In this case, Simon, Jane, and Barney work together to decipher a medieval treasure map that could lead to the Grail of Arthurian legend. ![]() Children get into real danger and use a combination of courage and clever planning to defeat the bad guys and save the day. You know the ones I mean- The Goonies is probably the most famous example, but there are others. Over Sea, Under Stone reminds me of that endless string of ’80s and ’90s movies featuring plucky groups of child protagonists outwitting bumbling adult villains. ![]()

Red clocks leni zumas5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But, unfortunately, the amount of "literary" frills in Red Clocks made it almost impossible to enjoy (maybe that isn't the right word, but you know what I'm saying). and the fervor of pro-life advocates, it is not a particularly implausible scenario. The Canadian government assist by erecting a figurative "Pink Wall" across the U.S.-Canadian border, meaning that they will capture and return any woman suspected of crossing the border for an abortion or IVF. Here, Zumas imagines a United States where the Personhood Amendment gives rights to unborn embryos, outlawing abortion and IVF (because said embryos cannot give consent). Between this and the superhero-movie-turned-superhero-book trend, you can pretty much predict the new book trends based on what's popular on the big and small screens. I guess we can probably expect more of these weird feminist(?) dystopias in the wake of The Handmaid's Tale's Hulu series. ![]()
